Heat 2 boilers installed at Grade II listed church

THE CHALLENGE

With a large vibrant community with various groups and activities running at the church, the building was in urgent need of an efficient heating system when it came to replacing the two existing floor-standing boilers, that had reached the end of their operational life, with parts no longer available. However, with the plant room located under the church crypt, strict criteria set out by the local planning authority, meant that external boiler flues were not allowed to be visible on the external walls of the church. In addition, any flue work needed to be as discreet as possible, and not detract from the character of the building. To resolve this, it was decided that long flues would be needed to run at a low level and terminate discreetly.

THE SOLUTION

To meet this challenge, Keston, with its market-leading twin flue capabilities was the perfect solution. For this project, Keston provided four heat boilers in cascade with an overall output of 220kW. Designed for simple installation and service, Keston Heat 2 boilers offer up to 18m* of twin flue capability. This provides a flexible heating solution for a variety of problematic installations, such as churches and listed buildings.

By working in conjunction with Keston, Greenheat, the installation company contracted for this project, decided to re-site the new boilers to a different location within the plant room and create a new level concrete slab to site the new boiler rig on. The flues then had to be suspended from the ceiling of the original coal chute to take them up to the street level. Once the flues were in place and the rig assembled on the new slab, the new boiler installation was relatively straightforward. Furthermore, the pipework was in a large bore press fit to speed up the installation process.

With space and height restrictions within the plant room also presenting a problem, the four Keston boilers were installed in a low-height cascade on a Keston Frame and Header Kit, which allows up to six boilers to be installed on a self-supporting frame.

Comprising all the gaskets and accessories needed to build the system, also saved valuable installation time and cost on-site. To further simplify installation, the compact size of the four Keston Heat 2 boilers and kit helped to solve access issues to the plant room, which was via a small, steep staircase.

With over 150 years of combined experience, Greenheat is a preferred Keston boiler repair, servicing and installation company covering London and the Southeast of England. Carrying stock of Keston boiler spares in the UK, Greenheat operates with both boiler and system engineers to address a diverse range of both boiler and heating system repairs and installations.

Martin Coulstock comments:
Greenheat is a stockist of Keston products, so we were perfectly positioned to supply the boilers for this project. As always, Keston offered an exemplary service, backed by a professional and knowledgeable team. With such a tight window in which to complete the installation, our selected merchant received swift delivery of the boiler cascade system to coincide with the start of the project.”
